France Telecom SA’s Orange mobile Orange will start selling the popular Apple iPhone in Britain later this year. O2, which will continue to sell the phone in Britain.
Orange spokesman said the iPhone would be available on its network by Christmas. It will sell both the original iPhone 3G model and the latest iPhone 3GS version, which was launched in June with faster connectivity and added features.
Orange now offers the popular handset – of which more than 25 million have been sold worldwide – in 28 countries and territories. The news will be a blow for O2, which has enjoyed a two-year exclusive distribution deal for Apple’s mobile. Orange has been selling the handsets in France since 2007.
O2 has responded to Orange’s announcement saying: “We always knew that iPhone exclusivity was for a limited period of time, but our relationship with Apple continues and will be an ongoing success.” The company claims over one million iPhone customers and says it is “becoming the home of smartphones” despite the exclusive contract loss.
