Reason behind, Interactive Supercomputing (ISC) developer of parallel computing software buys by Microsoft

Microsoft’s goal is to increase productivity by encapsulating complexity, so developers can focus on solving business problems.

Microsoft has purchased the technology assets of Interactive Supercomuting (ISC), a Waltham, MA, developer of parallel computing software.

In the deal, Microsoft gets ISC’s team of experts on parallel computing and HPC, as well as the products and technologies that the company has developed. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will continue to support ISC’s existing product, Star-P, but it will no longer be for sale, the two parties said in online statements.

The Microsoft blog says that ISC’s CEO, Bill Blake, and his firm’s technical experts are moving into the company’s New England Research & Development Center in Cambridge, MA. Xconomy last reported on the activities of ISC when the firm raised a second round of financing from Ascent Venture Partners, Fletcher Spaght Ventures, Flagship Ventures, Rock Maple Ventures, and Common Angels in October 2007. The firm had raised a total of $18 million from investors.

Microsoft’s goal is to simplify parallel programming by taking a holistic approach and providing solutions which span from local to distributed computing and from task concurrency to data parallelism. Microsoft plans to deliver a solution-stack consisting of OS resource management, a concurrency runtime, programming models, language extensions, libraries, and tools, which will make it simpler for both native and managed code developers to safely and productively build robust, scalable and responsive applications.

This will also enable industry partners to complement Microsoft’s technologies in order to solve the complex problems associated with developing high-quality parallel software.
