Should CEO’s Blog?
By Jeff Bressler for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:May 5, 2009
One of the best ways to establish yourself as an expert in your field is to create a CEO blog to give your colleagues, customers and potential customers a look at your personal insights about your business. If you have a successful blog others will rely on its content and visit often. You will establish yourself as a trusted “friend.” Obviously this will lead to new relationships and sales.
The big question though is should you blog at all and what are the ramifications of participating in a poorly done effort?
You can’t treat a blog as a new “toy.” If you are going to blog you have to make a significant investment of time and research. Too many would-be CEO bloggers treat their new toy as little more than a weekly newsletter, a way to broadcast their thoughts, rather than a way to create a dialogue. As mentioned, doing it right takes time, commitment and realistic expectations.
If you commit to blog first take the time to sit back and check out the landscape. You should do some investigation into other blogs related to your industry. Read the posts carefully. Also read the comments section to see what others are saying about the posts. If you read a blog with little or no comments ever, something about the content is probably not appealing to readers. If you can’t figure out how you would fix the problem to get readership up, you probably shouldn’t blog yourself.
A blog should not just be your one sided opinion. You should share your knowledge with others even if it means acknowledging the success of others in your own industry. You will only increase your personal credibility if you give a total overview of your industry by including the work of others, pertinent links and hands on advice.
Also, just because you have great knowledge in your field does not mean you can easily translate your thoughts into words. If writing is not one of your strong points meet with your public relations staff to help you put your words on paper in a cohesive manner.
Blogs have been around for awhile but still prove to be an excellent way to communicate with like minded individuals.
