By Amarendra Bhushan for CEOWORLD Magazine Updated:December 4, 2009

Wide range of Online Project Management Planning Tools available, the key to selecting the right one is understanding that different tools are needed along the different stages of a project life cycle. Good Project Management is one of the keys to a projects success.

Project management software solutions don’t require a large budget anymore. Although lots of alternatives to major solutions are available on the Internet, finding the right tool for your needs might be a complex process.

Project management includes developing a project plan, which includes defining project goals and objectives, specifying tasks or how goals will be achieved, what resources are need, and associating budgets and timelines for completion.

Traditionally, project development includes a number of elements: four to five stages, and a control system. Regardless of the methodology used, the project development process will have the same major stages:

1) Initiation,
2) Planning or development,
3) Production or execution,
4) Monitoring and controlling, and
5) Closing.

A must have fetures for Web based project management software:

1) Gain control of your projects
1) Dashboard and Reports
3) Track bugs, issues, risks
4) Track Resource Utilization
5) Track Time and Expense
6) Share files, discuss on-line, schedule meetings
7) Design customized business processes

Project management should follow simple process:

1. Agree precise specification for the project.
2. Plan the project – time, team, activities, resources, financials.
3. Communicate the project plan to your project team.
4. Agree and delegate project actions.
5. Manage, motivate, inform, encourage, enable the project team.
6. Check, measure, review project progress; adjust project plans, and inform the project team and others.
7. Complete project; review and report on project performance; give praise and thanks to the project team.

there are hundreds out there, and yours is a decent list, but I'd say you missed up-and-comer LiquidProject with a unique handling off elastic deadlines, and market veteran Tenrox for enterprise-level project management

  5. John on Fri, 20th Mar 2009 4:09 pm

Another great tool for online project planning and tracking is Intervals. It is a lot like many of the products listed here, but like them, has its own way of getting things done.

Thanks for the shout-out on Vertabase project management software.

  8. Project Management hut on Mon, 23rd Mar 2009 8:39 am

Most of these tools are extremely similar in both functionality and interface. It always amazes me how many small businesses out there are tapping into the Project Management Software market.

  9. John on Tue, 24th Mar 2009 5:16 am

I feel DeskAway should have been mentioned here. It is an excellent project management & collaboration tool.

  10. Dan on Tue, 24th Mar 2009 8:26 am

If you would like a tool to manage your small business activities and Projects, you can use this web aplication:

You can use it to manage and prioritize your Goals (for business but also in other areas of your life), Projects and Tasks. It has a Checklists section, for the routines and repetitive activities that any business has to do. Also, it features a Schedules section and a Calendar, for scheduling you time and activities.

ProjectOffice.net is an online project management tool that should be included here as well. Many features that set a new dimension of pm software.

  12. Profit Tomorrow on Thu, 16th Apr 2009 4:51 pm

This is another helpful tool to internet businessmen like I am… Time management and a productive tool that would make the business be optimized to its fullest

  13. bobvogel on Fri, 4th Dec 2009 10:37 pm

Thanks for including Autotask in your list of top online project management planning tools. I just wanted to clarify for everyone that Autotask is a completely integrated business management solution designed specifically for the IT services market. In addition to Project Portfolio Management, the hosted solution includes a robust Issue Management (service desk) module, full CRM, Time Tracking Billing, Inventory, Outsourcing and more starting at just $29 per month per user. Thanks again for including us in such great company!

I think what Marty meant to say was LiquidPlanner, and I agree that it has a very powerful scheduling engine, taking into account the uncertainty that we all need to have in our project schedule. Why setup a project schedule with hard dates and then have it become irrelevant once the project gets going (or a huge pain of a task to keep updated), LiquidPlanner has this covered in addition to many other valuable features (ones mentioned above, and more)

  15. Arturas on Sun, 6th Dec 2009 11:50 pm

An interesting list, though i don't believe that all these tools feature your own criteria like customized workflows. One thing I would definitely include as a must have for a powerful pm tool – ACL permissions, simply a must for big projects. It will soon be launched with the new version of our http://www.comindwork.com

  16. project management tool on Tue, 8th Dec 2009 6:46 am

Thanks for the extensive list! With a myriad of options to choose from, it’s no wonder why choosing a project management tool has become such a daunting task.

  17. Andrew Macdonald on Tue, 8th Dec 2009 5:36 pm

Thanks for the useful list of tools and descriptions.

For those of you interested in similar lists of online (or desktop) project management software, I’ve compiled lists and reviews at the Task and Project Management Software List.

Note: also includes to-do list and GTD software.

  18. MiddleWay on Mon, 14th Dec 2009 6:30 pm

Project Insight is definitely worth a mention, too. Although not a regular employee, I contract with the company that makes it to interview their customers (both huge and very small companies) for success stories, and what they all say again and again is that it's got the more advanced features like intelligent scheduling that PMs need while giving the regular team members the Outlook and Project integration that makes it easy to get up to speed. I'd guess most of us have worked on projects where there was a manager pushing a new PM system and half the team wouldn't even log in to enter their time because of new-app fatigue. I've used Harvest and Basecamp and while those are fine for to-do lists, Project Insight definitely has a lot of power for not a lot of $$.

Great Article. Have you tried out Injoos Teamware. I would reckon that they have the most comprehensive integrated collaboration platform. With their latest release they have added a new twist to track and execute projects “the social way”. Checkout their Blog http://injoos.com/blog/2009/10/09/seamless-coll...

  20. Cynthia West on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 3:05 pm

Just to add one more web based project management solution to the mix, Project Insight. Project Insight is more of a mid market portfolio and project management software solution. We offer intelligent scheduling (a la Microsoft Project), so if you have 1 or more savvy project managers that want robust functionality, yet ease of use. This could be the right direction.

With Project Management Software it really is a case of which system suits your business requirements best. As a vendor in this market we know too well that there are numerous options and alternatives out there as shown in another of ceoworld's earlier write ups > http://bit.ly/cZsH3p
