European Union: Which countries drink the most alcohol?
European countries are well-known for producing some of the most popular alcoholic drinks, such as beer, wine, and vodka, and they also happen to consume them. In this report, we will discuss the countries with the highest alcohol consumption in Europe.
According to the 2023 CEOWORLD magazine health report, the Czech Republic has the highest alcohol consumption per capita at 14.3 liters, followed by Latvia at 13.2 liters. On the other hand, Italy has the lowest alcohol consumption at 8 liters per capita. Across Europe, every person aged 15 and over consumes an average of 9.5 liters of pure alcohol annually.
Although there are significant differences in the estimated alcohol consumption between European Union (EU) countries, the trend remains the same: men consume more alcohol than women. On a daily basis, 13.0% of men consume alcohol, while only 4.1% of women do so. Similarly, 36.4% of men, compared to 21.7% of women, consume alcohol every week. The gender drinking gaps are the most significant in Portugal, where 33.4% of men drink daily compared to 9.7% of women, and in Spain, where 20.2% of men consume alcohol daily versus 6.1% of women.
