The Three Rules of Extraordinary Leadership

Colleen Callander & Shannah Kennedy

The mark of exceptional leadership lies in a person’s unwavering dedication to a cause greater than themselves, their selflessness in serving others, their courage, integrity, and the ability to inspire greatness in those they lead. Great leaders have the power to motivate people to explore new horizons, to accomplish their goals, and to reach heights they never thought possible. Let’s delves into the essence of outstanding leadership and outlines three fundamental rules that form the foundation of extraordinary leadership, shaping a legacy that inspires and empowers others.

Rule 1: Lead Self

Leadership begins with self-awareness and a deep understanding of one’s values and purpose. Seventy percent of effective leadership hinges on how well a leader navigates their own life and choices. By building structure and discipline into their routine, setting meaningful goals, and maintaining positivity in the face of challenges, leaders become primed to inspire, influence, and positively impact others. Leading oneself is the first step toward becoming a leader worth following.

What are you doing to become the leader in your life?

Are you clear on your values and purpose?

Rule 2: Lead Others

A common misconception exists about the distinction between leaders and managers. While managers focus on operational tasks and seek followers, true leaders create vision and inspire others to follow them willingly. Leading others involves empowering, motivating, and inspiring people to unlock their potential. It requires providing necessary resources, guidance, and training to escalate their success. Exceptional leaders encourage creativity, take risks, and set a clear strategy while also holding others accountable to maintain focus on goals and objectives.

The Difference Between Leaders and Managers:

Leaders EMPOWER, Managers COMMAND

Leaders CREATE OTHER LEADERS, Managers CREATE FOLLOWERS

Leaders FOCUS ON GOALS, Managers FOCUS ON TASKS

Leaders ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY, Managers ENCOURAGE CONFORMITY

Leaders TAKE RISKS, Managers PLAY BY THE RULES

Leaders PROVIDE VISION, Managers PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS

Leaders THINK IDEAS, Managers THINK EXECUTION

Leaders TRANSFORMATION, Managers TRANSACTION

Leaders CREATE NEW ROADS, Managers FOLLOW EXISTING ROADS

Are you a leader or a manager?

Which one do you want to be?

Rule 3: Lead Always

True leadership is not selective; it is a constant presence in both favourable and challenging circumstances. Leading always means being an unwavering guiding force during both good times and bad. Great leaders are judged not in moments of success but in times of adversity. When faced with uncertainties, setbacks, or unforeseen challenges like a pandemic or sales shortfall, outstanding leaders rise to the occasion, providing direction, inspiration, and a sense of purpose for their teams.

How do you react when things are going your way?

What’s one thing you can implement to become an always-on leader?

Extraordinary leadership goes beyond management; it embodies passion, integrity, and vision. Leaders who lead themselves, inspire others, and maintain a positive presence in all circumstances and leave an incredible impact on the world. By empowering others, fostering creativity, and encouraging risk-taking, these leaders create a culture of growth and continuous improvement.

To become such a leader, one must first understand themselves, their values, and their purpose. Armed with self-awareness, leaders can ignite the potential in others, enabling them to achieve greatness. By following the three fundamental rules of leadership – leading self, leading others, and leading always – a leader can craft a legacy that leaves a lasting and positive influence on the world, both in business and in life. The true essence of leadership lies in recognising that the journey towards greatness is never-ending and that the greatest impact is achieved through the elevation of others.
