Elon Musk Announces Neuralink’s new Milestone
A year after receiving approval for testing, Elon Musk’s Neuralink has achieved a significant milestone by implanting its wireless brain chip in a human for the first time. Musk announced the successful implantation on Sunday, stating that the patient is recovering well.
Neuralink, founded by Musk in 2016, aims to revolutionize technology and medicine through its brain-chip technology. The device, about the size of a coin, is surgically implanted in the skull, with ultra-thin wires connecting to the brain to establish a brain-computer interface. Initial products like Telepathy are designed to enable users to control devices simply by thinking, with potential applications for individuals with neurological disorders affecting motor function.
The human testing phase of Neuralink will focus on gathering data on safety and effectiveness while refining the device’s functionality. Musk reported promising initial results indicating successful neuron spike detection, suggesting the device’s potential to interpret brain signals accurately. Neuralink’s human trials received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in May 2023.
Neuralink has previously conducted testing on monkeys and pigs, demonstrating basic functionalities like playing video games or moving cursors on screens through implanted devices. While no fatalities were reported among the test subjects, there were instances of issues such as paralysis, seizures, and brain swelling.
Besides Neuralink, other companies are also engaged in brain-computer interface trials, with approximately 40 ongoing clinical trials in the United States. For instance, Australia-based company Synchron has implanted its device in a US patient without the need for skull incisions, focusing primarily on medical applications.
