Former French President’s Mansion Is for Sale for US$30 Million

France Flag French Flag

Luxury residence seekers who love history and spectacular views will appreciate one of the latest properties Douglas Elliman listed in the market last September. The real estate company confirmed that a spacious residential property once owned by France’s former president, Charles de Gaulle, is up for sale for US$30 million. The historical house is in Beaulieu-Sur-Mer, a seaside community on the French Riviera between Monaco and Nice, France.

De Gaulle served as a military officer who spearheaded the Free French Forces versus Germany’s Nazi regime in World War II. The intrepid French patriot also headed the French Republic’s Provisional Government from 1944 to 1946, aiding in the reinstatement of democracy in his country. Before becoming president in 1959, De Gaulle served as prime minister following his appointment a year prior. He passed away in November 1970 at 79 years old.

Andrea Wohl Lucas is a listing representative from Douglas Elliman. She cited that the stately residential property is where De Gaulle penned his formal address for Nice’s liberation. Wohl Lucas described the former French leader’s 1945 home as extraordinarily expansive and dwarfs its neighbors, which are between 4,000 to 5,000 square feet with up to five bedrooms. De Gaulle’s listed three-story estate spans 11,000 square feet. With nine bedrooms and extra staff rooms, it appeals to discerning luxury property buyers seeking sprawling residences.

According to Wohl Lucas, De Gaulle’s 1945 French Riviera house’s main bedroom offers breathtaking and unrestricted views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. She added that the primary bedroom measures 900 square feet with a massive bathroom and two dressing rooms.

Moreover, prospective buyers will find De Gaulle’s former Côte d’Azur house stunning and cozy, with several terraces, a formal dining area, and an elevator. It comprises two avant-garde kitchens and extensive living spaces. The historical property of sheer modernity has an outdoor swimming pool, which more than one acre of green gardens embrace. Residential staff or visitors can stay in the mansion’s several studios, while caretakers will find an accommodation space, all of which are alongside the primary house.

France has particular rules on historical buildings’ refurbishment and construction similar to other territories. Wohl Lucas remarked that the notable Beaulieu-Sur-Mer residence required all renovation types, which were carried out based on the safeguarded landmark requisites. De Gaulle’s former French Riviera mansion underwent a complete refurbishment. Wohl Lucas shared that its unidentified owner originally had a gut renovation performed on the property in 2011, followed by further reconstruction seven years later.
