Joyce Markiewicz: Catholic Health’s First Female Chief Executive

Catholic Health

Joyce Markiewicz, drawing from her extensive experience as the chief business development officer at Catholic Health, is confident that her upcoming role as the president and CEO, beginning on September 1, is well-aligned with her past responsibilities.

Throughout the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Markiewicz played a pivotal role in introducing innovative solutions to address the public health crisis. However, her responsibilities extended beyond immediate concerns; she was also dedicated to shaping the future of healthcare, identifying forthcoming opportunities, and envisioning the landscape of post-pandemic medical care.

With the responsibility of leading Western New York’s second-largest health system, an organization valued at $1.2 billion and employing approximately 9,000 individuals, her decisions and strategies will be of great interest to observers.

Catholic Health’s decision to appoint Markiewicz, aged 64, as the successor to Mark Sullivan, who concludes his five-year tenure as chief executive on August 31, is rooted in her vision and capabilities. This transition marks a significant milestone, as she will be the fifth CEO and the first female chief executive in the 25-year history of Catholic Health.
