Turkcell Boosts AI Investments to Drive Technological Innovation
Turkish telecom operator Turkcell is making significant investments in artificial intelligence (AI) to keep pace with the rapid advancements in this field, according to the company’s CEO, Ali Taha Koç, who recently shared insights with RCR Wireless News.
Koç highlighted that AI is a key technological shift reshaping industries worldwide and noted that Turkcell had recognized this transformation early on. He explained that the company began investing in AI to stay aligned with global developments, anticipating the profound impact AI would have on business operations across sectors.
He also pointed out that Turkcell established its “Artificial Intelligence Principles” back in 2020 and had since identified AI as one of its core strategic priorities. The company’s focus, he mentioned, is on fostering innovation and ensuring that AI solutions benefit society while adhering to ethical standards. Turkcell is integrating AI across various areas of its operations, from tailoring customer offers to predicting network issues and conserving energy.
Discussing specific AI applications at Turkcell, Koç outlined the use of analytical models and solutions built on GPU-based infrastructures. He detailed the “Base Station Service Interruption Prediction” system, a tool developed by Turkcell engineers that analyzes millions of network alarms using AI and IoT algorithms, allowing the company to foresee and prevent network failures before they happen.
In addition, Koç mentioned that Turkcell has developed natural language processing (NLP) solutions capable of generating speech almost indistinguishable from a human voice. This technology is currently being utilized to convert package details into voice format for Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems, enhancing customer interactions. He added that these NLP tools support a range of services, including image and voice processing, machine learning, fraud detection, and digital verification. Turkcell has also introduced a virtual assistant, built entirely in-house, which is now embedded in all customer-facing channels.
Koç shared that the company is advancing AI integration in devices intended for vehicle use, as well as developing specialized AI models for these applications. Turkcell’s research and development efforts aim to expand in areas like big language models and to introduce generative AI solutions in value-added segments.
He further explained that Turkcell leverages AI to strengthen its network infrastructure, with its engineers designing AI-driven tools for base station planning. The technology is also used for handling customer complaints and planning fiber investments geographically. These AI-driven processes contribute to Turkcell’s operational efficiency and financial performance.
A key innovation, Koç said, is GEDI—a patented AI application that supports Turkcell’s business by analyzing spatial data. This tool has significantly aided the company’s fiber investment planning, resulting in over 5.8 million home connections in Turkey. With GEDI’s data-driven insights, Turkcell aims to future-proof its fiber infrastructure.
Looking forward, Turkcell is planning to roll out 5G Advanced services by 2026, underscoring its commitment to leading technological evolution in the telecom industry.
