Denmark’s Wealthiest Families See Billions Added to Their Fortunes in 2024
Denmark’s 20 richest families collectively increased their wealth by approximately $8.4 billion over the past year, according to the 2024 annual ranking of the country’s 100 wealthiest families. The next 80 families on the list also saw their fortunes grow, though at a more modest pace, with a collective gain of $0.8 billion.
A detailed analysis of the data indicates that a small number of families were responsible for much of the significant rise in wealth. The Kirk Kristiansen family, the heirs and owners of Lego, saw their fortune increase by nearly $4.6 billion over the past year, solidifying their status as Denmark’s wealthiest family with an estimated net worth of $33.5 billion.
The Louis-Hansen family, ranked fourth, experienced a $1.6 billion increase in their wealth, bringing their total fortune to nearly $6.8 billion. Their assets are heavily linked to a significant stake in the medical equipment company Coloplast. Meanwhile, Denmark’s third-richest family, the Clausens, owners of Danfoss, boosted their net worth by $1 billion, reaching $7.7 billion.
The Holch Povlsen family, owners of the Bestseller fashion group, retained their position as the second-richest family in Denmark with a fortune nearing $7.8 billion, reflecting an increase of $0.24 billion over the past year.
Overall, families with substantial real estate holdings faced challenges due to rising interest rates and a decline in property values, which led to downward adjustments in the total estimated value of their portfolios. In contrast, families with major stakes in publicly traded companies had a strong year, benefiting from rising stock prices and substantial investment returns.
