Leading Through Rapid Growth: 3 Tips To Avoid Turnover and Employee Burnout

Almost every company, at some point in time, will experience a period of growth or expansion that applies pressure on its executive team, and in turn adds pressure and workload to members throughout the entire organization.

The worst thing leaders can do is turn a blind-eye to their employees feeling overworked, burnt out, and taken advantage of during these transformative and pivotal times.

As leaders, what is the best way to navigate periods of rapid growth where everyone may need to contribute a little bit more to make it through a period of hyper growth? Here are my three pieces of advice.

Listen to your employees.

Actively listen to your employees when they are feeling upset, under motivated or unsure about proceeding forward on a project due to unchartered waters.  As a service centered leader, it is important to provide services in return for your team.  One of the easiest ways to do that, is to actively listen.  Repeat to the employee what you think you heard, actively schedule one on one meetings with your employees to create a safe place for them to express how they are feeling, which will set them up for success.  Asking your employees for active feedback and really learning about things that are upsetting to them will only garner a successful and empathetic team environment.

Promote self care/self love activities.

It is so important to ensure that you are sharing examples of self care and self love activities that you may partake in or would like to share with the organization.  Oftentimes, I will share articles with my teams that are relevant to this topic and have an online or offline discussion about it.  I love utilizing an application on my phone for meditation, relaxation, breathing, uplifting stories, etc. daily, and I have shared it with multiple people on my teams, encouraging them to utilize it.

Schedule All-Hands meetings quarterly.

Sharing what is occurring within the organization across the company across all function groups/areas is important.  Sharing the genius of some of the subject matter experts in the functional groups will show the entire company the value in the self worth of every employee.  The All-Hands meeting also enables the management team to share vision, positive reinforcement, and goal achievement all around to share how valuable everyone is.  We all have a mission, and it’s equally as important to make sure that everyone on your team is bought into it and sees it as you do.
