5 Myths About Sustainable Fashion Debunked

Fashion Shopping

Sustainable fashion is becoming increasingly popular for many reasons. It is a major step towards sustainable development in one of the highest polluting industries in the world. The unethical and anti-environmental activities in the manufacture, packaging, and marketing of fashion have cost the planet more than it bargained for. However, with the growing emphasis on the need to switch to sustainable fashion, positive results are emerging. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go before the fashion industry goes significantly.

While it is pacing towards a better future, there have also been certain misconceptions that I do not wish to be carried forward. There are many unfounded notions about sustainable fashion which tarnish its image and stall easy transition among the public. Many of these myths might have been facts a decade ago but they are no longer so. Hence, I will try to dispel a few of these misconceptions surrounding sustainable fashion. These are 5 myths, and if you believe in any of these myths, you should stop believing in them right away.

So, let us take a look at what we have here.

  1. Expensive as hell
There is no denying that sustainable fashion is indeed more expensive than the rest. But, if you think about it carefully, you will understand why such is the case. Sustainable fashion uses eco-friendly products and processes that are not as cheaply available as synthetic materials. Also, a lot of manual labor goes into crafting such fashion. Hence, factoring in all the costs that are expended by designers and labels, you should be able to understand why sustainable fashion is expensive. However, saying that sustainable fashion is necessarily beyond the means of ordinary people is an exaggeration you should totally not fall for.
  2. Boring and dull designs
Just because there is the word ‘sustainable’ attached, many think that it is mostly rustic and dull in design. If you hold such an understanding, then that means you haven’t done your research right and are basing your opinions on hearsay. Many fashion designers, even the most reputed ones, have started switching to sustainable fashion, and their designs are as wonderful as any other. There is sustainable fashion for every occasion, but you will have to research right to know about that.
  3. Not easy to find
While this might have been the case a decade ago, the present condition is much different. Today, most fashion designers are endeavoring to switch to sustainable fashion, or at least adopt eco-friendly processes, to become part of the global drive to minimize the carbon footprint of the fashion industry. As a result of these efforts, you will not find problems in locating designers and brands producing and marketing sustainable fashion. In fact, lately, sustainable fashion has become quite competitive with the rise of several new brands and the changing moods of the existing ones. So, rest assured that you will not have to struggle to find the right eco-friendly fashion because it is widely available now.
  4. Sustainable fashion is just too much care
Well, we take care of our fashion choices. However, believe it or not, synthetic fashion requires more care and lacks high durability in comparison with sustainable fashion. Eco-friendly fashion implies the use of natural fabric and dyes, which, yes, require careful washing but outlast synthetic fashion any day. Due to the short life of synthetic fashion, you will spend more frequently in buying new clothes. So, if you do your math right, there is more loss than gain when it comes to synthetic fashion.
  5. Luxury brands are sustainable
There is a widely held misconception that luxury retail means sustainable fashion. Just because you are buying off a bag from Gucci store does not mean it has been crafted keeping in mind environmental standards. Animal furs and leather are still commonly used by high-end fashion brands despite the calls to ban them. Just because a particular brand is higher on the price scale does not automatically make it eco-friendly. In fact, many famous, luxury retail brands have been accused of not following sustainable guidelines and indulging in deleterious practices. So, before you go out to buy luxury retail, you do your research right.
