Revealed: The World’s Most Innovative Countries, 2019

Switzerland has been recognized as the most innovative country the world for 2019, according to the 2019 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII), while Sweden and the United States placed second and third, respectively. The 2019 rankings placed the Netherlands in fourth ahead of the United Kingdom into fifth; while Finland ranked sixth, and Denmark seventh.

Overall, among the top 10 most innovative countries, the eighth, ninth, and tenth positions are held by Singapore, Germany, and Israel. South Korea took the No. 11 spot, followed by Ireland (No.12) and Hong Kong (No.13).

Meanwhile, China ranked No. 14 in the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO’s ranking of the most innovative countries in the world for 2019. Japan came in fifteenth place, followed by France (sixteenth), Canada (seventeenth), Luxemburg (eighteenth), and Norway, ranked nineteenth.

Out of 129 most innovative countries in the world for 2019, Iceland ranked No. 20th. India moved up five notches to become the 52nd most innovative country in the world. However, other BIMSTEC members such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Nepal are at 116, 89, 43, 109, respectively. Myanmar and Bhutan still absent from the global innovation landscape. Meanwhile, The United States improved its ranking from 6th in 2018 and to 3rd in 2019.

The Index ranks 129 economies based on 80 indicators, ranging from intellectual property filing rates to mobile-application creation, education spending and scientific and technical publications.
