How did your early experiences shape your views on entrepreneurship and philanthropy?
From a young age, growing up in a middle-class immigrant family, the values of resilience, discipline, and empathy were deeply ingrained in me by my hardworking parents. This upbringing shaped my worldview, emphasizing the importance of giving back to society—a principle that has guided both my entrepreneurial ventures and philanthropic efforts. The challenges I faced early on made me realize the power of economic independence and inspired me to use business as a platform to drive social change.
What motivated you to transition from a successful business career to focus primarily on philanthropy?
After achieving significant milestones in various industries, I felt a compelling need to directly address the socio-economic challenges facing women and children around the world. The establishment of the Saba Family Foundation was a natural progression, allowing me to dedicate more resources and time to creating sustainable impact through education, healthcare, and economic empowerment programs.
Can you discuss a project or partnership through your foundation that you find particularly impactful?
One of the most rewarding partnerships has been with Stanford University Medical Center, where we collaborated on innovative healthcare solutions that significantly improve the quality of life for underserved populations. Additionally, our work with the Women Refugee Commission has been pivotal in supporting displaced women and children, ensuring they have access to critical resources and opportunities.
What strategies do you employ in your philanthropic initiatives to ensure they are effective and sustainable?
We focus on building strong partnerships with local and global organizations to combine expertise and resources effectively. Additionally, we invest in capacity building within communities to ensure that the initiatives are not only impactful but also self-sustaining in the long run. This approach has allowed us to create scalable solutions to complex problems.
As a mentor to female entrepreneurs, what key pieces of advice do you offer to help them succeed?
I emphasize the importance of building a solid network, remaining resilient in the face of adversity, and staying true to one’s values. I also advise them to seek out mentors and create strategic partnerships that can provide guidance and open doors to new opportunities. Most importantly, I encourage them to maintain a balance between their professional goals and personal well-being.
Reflecting on your business career, what do you consider your most significant achievement?
While I value all my business ventures, pioneering in industries traditionally dominated by men, such as oil and gas and gold mining, stands out. Breaking these barriers not only shaped the course of my career but also paved the way for other women in these fields.
How do you balance the demands of being a business leader, philanthropist, and a parent?
It’s about prioritizing and making conscious choices. I integrate my family life with my professional and philanthropic activities whenever possible, which allows me to fulfill my roles without compromising on either front. Additionally, I practice mindfulness and meditation to manage stress and maintain clarity in decision-making.
In your view, how can entrepreneurs and businesses best contribute to societal improvement?
Businesses have a profound capability to drive societal change by implementing sustainable practices and investing in community development. Entrepreneurs can leverage their innovations to solve pressing social issues, making a direct impact while also setting a precedent for future businesses.
What future initiatives can we expect from the Saba Family Foundation?
We are expanding our educational programs to include more scholarships for girls in STEM fields, as well as increasing our support for mental health initiatives globally. Another exciting development is our upcoming partnership with tech startups that are developing solutions to improve access to clean water and healthcare in remote areas.
Finally, what do you hope your legacy will be?
I hope to be remembered as someone who made a tangible difference in the lives of others, especially in empowering women and children to achieve their fullest potential. My legacy should be one that inspires future generations to pursue their passions relentlessly and use their success to make the world a better place.
