Willy Adames Signs Major Contract with the Giants, Cementing His Star Status

Willy Adames, one of the Detroit Tigers’ most notable Latin American prospects, has finalized a significant seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Adames, originally signed by the Tigers out of the Dominican Republic in 2013, spent two years in their minor-league system before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in a deal that brought David Price to Detroit in 2014. Over the next decade, Adames transformed into one of Major League Baseball’s premier shortstops—and now one of its highest-paid players.

After being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021 as part of the Rays’ efforts to make room for shortstop prospect Wander Franco, Adames flourished. He hit free agency following an outstanding 2024 season in which he played 161 games, solidifying his reputation as a reliable and durable presence on the field.

While Adames has long been recognized for his defensive prowess, his metrics dipped in 2024. Acknowledging this, he indicated his willingness to switch to third base if required by his new team. However, with Matt Chapman firmly established as the Giants’ third baseman, such a move seems unlikely.

Adames’ signing takes one of the top free agents off the market just as MLB’s winter meetings commence in Dallas. While his deal is a significant headline, much of the attention remains focused on Juan Soto, whose anticipated record-breaking contract continues to dominate the offseason narrative.
