Google’s Sundar Pichai Pledges Strong Defense Amidst Antitrust Proceedings
Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently affirmed the company’s position as the industry leader in search, pledging a robust defense against the ongoing antitrust case. Responding to inquiries about potential contract impacts, including those with major partners like Apple, Pichai stated that Google will contest the ruling vigorously.
Pichai emphasized that Google’s enduring success has been due to its reputation as the preferred choice for consumers and partners alike. According to reports, he noted that people consistently choose Google because they consider it the best product available and added that Google has made extensive efforts to ensure its services are accessible across all platforms.
Though he refrained from outlining specific strategies, Pichai commented on the situation, saying it was not appropriate to speculate while litigation is active. He remarked that Google’s achievements stem from substantial innovation, which the court has also recognized, and assured that the company remains committed to ongoing advancements.
Addressing the scrutiny surrounding Google, Pichai acknowledged it as an inevitable aspect of being a large-scale, influential company. He reiterated that Google is prepared to defend itself, pointing out that some initial proposals from the Department of Justice (DOJ) have been particularly broad-reaching.
The situation intensified following an October 7, 2024, injunction by US District Judge James Donato, which directed Google to open the Play Store to greater competition. This order mandates that Google allow Android apps from external sources, prevents restrictions on in-app payment options, and requires support for other third-party app stores for the next three years.
