Bayern Munich CEO on Club World Cup 2025 and Its New Era
The Club World Cup, once a smaller tournament featuring only 6-7 teams and starting directly in the knockout stages, is undergoing a major transformation. The 2025 edition will expand to include 32 teams, adopting a structure reminiscent of the old Champions League format. Held every four years, qualification will be based on confederation rankings across that period or by winning key intercontinental tournaments, such as the Champions League.
Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen shared his thoughts on the revamped competition, expressing enthusiasm for the prospect of top European clubs competing against teams from around the world. He noted that while concerns about player fatigue exist, the fact that the tournament is held only once every four years mitigates this issue. Dreesen emphasized that participation must make financial sense, as clubs could face additional costs from extended stays abroad, potentially up to four weeks if they reach the final. He added that this might necessitate larger squads to cope with the demands of the tournament.
