Roma’s Turmoil: Leadership Shakeups and Missed Ambitions – CEO Lina Souloukou Resigns
Chaos has been the defining feature at Roma for several seasons, marked by constant managerial changes, fan unrest, and questionable market decisions. This tumultuous environment recently led to the dismissal of head coach José Mourinho and Italian legend Daniele De Rossi, alongside the resignation of the club’s CEO, Lina Souloukou, putting owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin under intense scrutiny.
Lina Souloukou, the Greek CEO, stepped down just three days after the controversial firing of De Rossi, a decision that sparked outrage among Roma’s passionate fanbase, despite his winless run this season. In an official statement, the club acknowledged her departure, thanking her for her service during a challenging period. The statement came amid reports that Souloukou had been placed under protective measures due to the escalating tensions and threats she faced following De Rossi’s dismissal.
To understand the current disarray at Roma, one must look back to 2020, when the Friedkin family, led by Dan and Ryan, took control of the club. Dan Friedkin, a film producer, officially became Roma’s owner and president after acquiring the club for approximately €600 million. Since then, nearly €1 billion has been invested with the goal of restoring Roma to Champions League regulars and establishing a long-term elite project. However, this vision has yet to materialize.
Roma’s last appearance in the Champions League was during the 2018-19 season, reaching the round of 16. Despite some success, including a UEFA Conference League title and a Europa League final under Mourinho, Roma’s Serie A performance has fallen short of expectations. The team came close to securing a Champions League spot but ultimately failed to achieve it.
The significant financial investment has so far resulted in underwhelming outcomes, with Roma finishing seventh once and securing three consecutive sixth-place finishes in Serie A. As the club continues to struggle domestically, the need for even greater investment looms, particularly if Roma is to realize its ambition of building a new stadium.
