Leaving Corporate to Follow Your Dreams: A Journey of Transformation

Octopi Are Very Sly by Mary Beth Lacy
Octopi Are Very Sly by Mary Beth Lacy

Retirement is an opportunity for a vibrant beginning ripe with opportunities to chase dreams that once seemed just out of reach. This chapter of my life tells a tale of transformation from a seasoned golf public relations professional to a children’s book author, finding joy and purpose in the whimsical world of storytelling.

From Corporate Life to Creative Passion: Discovering My New True Calling

After years of penning press releases and driving marketing campaigns, I craved a shift toward something deeply fulfilling. My inspiration sparked while reminiscing about the countless nights spent reading to my children, an activity that was more than a bedtime ritual—it was our gateway to new worlds. The research underscores the benefits, showing that reading together strengthens language skills and family bonds. This realization propelled me to leave the corporate grind and pursue my passion for children’s literacy, creating stories that connect and resonate with young minds and the young at heart.

A Story Born from Curiosity and Creativity

The idea for my debut book, “Octopi are Very Sly,” emerged during a swim with my daughter amidst the COVID-19 lockdowns. A casual chat about octopi’s intelligence led to the birth of Harry the Octopus, a character embodying resilience and adaptability—traits we all needed during the pandemic. The story was a beacon of hope and creativity for families struggling with the sudden shift to homeschooling and remote learning, offering a playful escape into a world where challenges are met with courage and creativity.

The Power of Community in Bringing Stories to Life

Bringing Harry and Suzette to life was a community effort. I leaned on a circle of friends, former colleagues, and new creative partners, drawing on their expertise in everything from illustration to marketing. This collaboration was crucial, as teamwork often sparks innovation and enriches creative projects. By embracing feedback and engaging in creative partnerships, “Octopi are Very Sly” evolved into a story that delights and inspires readers of all ages.

My shift from the corporate world to creative writing has been enlightening. The journey taught me the value of patience and the importance of persistence. Leaving the corporate environment isn’t about stopping; it’s about changing gears, exploring new paths, and redefining your purpose. I learned that small steps can lead to significant achievements and that every milestone deserves celebration.

If you’re considering a similar transition, I encourage you to take those dreams off the shelf, dust them off, and step forward with intention. Giving back and supporting others embarking on similar paths is also enriching. By doing so, we enrich our lives and inspire and impact others in meaningful ways.

Leaving the corporate world is an exciting journey of self-discovery and reinvention, teeming with opportunities for creativity and connection. My story is a testament to the possibilities that await when you embrace this new chapter with open arms and an eager heart. Let it inspire you to seize this moment as a time of extraordinary adventure and fulfillment.

Mary Beth Lacy
Mary Beth Lacy, born in Princeton, NJ, discovered her love for storytelling early on. From her figure skating days in New Jersey to captaining the boys’ golf team in Georgia, her journey led her to a fulfilling career in golf PR. A Furman University English major and avid golfer, she worked with PGA Tour events in California, including the Bob Hope Classic and The Skins Game Golf Tournament, before founding Mary Beth Lacy, Incorporated in 1998. For over 30 years, she represented major brands and golf personalities globally.

In 2023, after a career of press conferences and countless articles, Mary Beth retired. Married to Christopher Lacy with two children, she now splits her time between Palm Desert, California, and St. Simons Island, Georgia, savoring the beauty of both locations. Her passion for writing, nurtured by her upbringing, led her to publish her first children’s book, “Octopi Are Very Sly.” The tale encourages resilience, dreaming big, and cherishing love and friendship.

Family holds a special place in her heart, especially her Irish Catholic roots. Her fond memories include reading with her father and sharing stories with her own children. She has been inspired by so many authors, both adults and children, that it would be hard to list them all. As Pooh, would say, “Oh bother! Think, Think, Think.”
