Google CEO Sundar Pichai Turns 52, and he is Celebrating it

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, marks his 52nd birthday today. Born in 1972 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Pichai pursued metallurgical engineering at IIT Kharagpur. He later moved to the United States to earn a Master’s in materials science and engineering from Stanford University, followed by an MBA, where he was honored as a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.

Pichai’s career at Google began in 2004, where he initially led product management and innovation for Google’s client software products, including Chrome and Chrome OS, and played a key role in developing Google Drive. He ascended to the role of CEO in 2015.

Reflecting on his family life, Pichai has highlighted the impact of new gadgets on their daily routines. The arrival of a rotary telephone after a five-year wait, and later their first television, were transformative experiences. He also recalled biking long distances to school without gears, appreciating the dramatic difference when he eventually got a bike with gears. These experiences shaped his perspective on technology, fostering an enduring optimism about its potential to improve lives.

Reflecting on his upbringing in Madurai, Pichai has shared memories of his modest childhood. The family would often sleep on the living room floor, and during a drought, they faced significant anxiety. Even today, he keeps a bottle of water beside his bed, a habit rooted in those early experiences. Pichai fondly recalls the simplicity of his early life compared to the complexities of today’s world.
