How AI is Arming IT Professionals Against Cyber Threats

Cyber Threats

In 2023, the number of cyber-attacks reached a record-breaking level. In 2024, the threat actors have intensified their efforts even further. It is predicted that cybercrime will cause a loss of $9.5 trillion this year. According to Cybercrime Magazine, if cybercrime was considered as a country, it would be the world’s third-largest economy after the U.S. and China.

IT professionals and security teams are playing a constant game of whack-a-mole, trying to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals as they use increasingly sophisticated methods for breaching networks. The bad guys are increasingly leveraging AI tools to launch attacks at scale. IT teams need to arm themselves with AI technology to keep threat actors at bay and protect their networks.

Key Benefits of Using AI for Cybersecurity

Here are some of the key benefits that AI provides for IT teams.

  1. Faster Threat Detection: Mitigating cyber threats requires fast detection and response. AI can analyze significant data sets from network traffic, log files, and more to uncover unusual patterns that might indicate an attack. Often, the earliest warning signs may be highly nuanced and difficult for SecOps teams to see on their own.
  2. Predictive Analytics: AI models can learn normal behavior, creating baselines that can be compared to real-time traffic to detect deviations for further investigation. AI can deploy predictive analytics to run an endless number of simulations to gauge the potential impact of these deviations.
  3. Proactive Threat Hunting: AI can also enable proactive threat hunting. Rather than waiting until potential attacks occur, AI can scan systems to look for security gaps and vulnerabilities. This has become more important than ever with today’s complex networks. Networks may connect to hundreds of thousands of endpoints. One report said that security teams may lack direct visibility to nearly half of them.
  4. Automation of Security Tasks: One of AI’s core functions is the ability to automate tasks. In security, this can include security information and event management (SIEM) log analysis or patch management to free up time for IT and security teams. Network automation can relieve IT teams of the burden of managing firewalls, running backups, testing, deploying, and operating network devices manually. Automation also lets you respond more quickly to changes in the network environment to detect potential threats faster.
  5. Improved Threat Intelligence: AI can also analyze data, including threat intelligence from multiple sources to counter the latest threats and exploits. This has become especially important as threat actors are using AI tools as well and new threats emerge constantly. AI-automated malware and large-scale attacks are growing. Hackers breach an average of 30,000 websites daily.
  6. Reducing Alert Fatigue: IT teams also have to deal with a steady volume of alerts, which can lead to what’s known as alert fatigue. AI can help sort and prioritize alerts, surfacing the highest profile alerts so security teams can focus their attention. This reduces the volume of alerts. When you consider that nearly 80% of IT professionals say they have some 500 security alerts open at any one time, you can quickly see the benefit.
  7. Improved Incident Response: AI can also accelerate incident response through rapid analysis of event data. Beyond alerting security teams, AI can also recommend containment and remediation steps. In some cases, AI can automate certain responses to mitigate security threats on its own.

Embracing AI Cybersecurity Tools

With the constant barrage of attacks and intrusion attempts, IT professionals need AI tools to monitor, manage, and mitigate cyber threats — providing a more sophisticated approach to safeguard organizations. Those embracing AI solutions will be better prepared as the volume of attacks continues to increase.
