2024 Global Billionaires: $14.2 Trillion in Wealth, Record 2,781 Billionaires, and Rising Concentration
With a record 14 individuals joining the exclusive $100 billion Club, the collective fortunes of the elite few now exceed $2 trillion, representing a staggering 14% of all billionaire wealth. This concentration underscores the widening wealth gap, with just 0.5% of the world’s 2,781 billionaires holding such significant assets.
Moreover, the billionaire landscape continues to expand, with 2,781 individuals now boasting billionaire status—a remarkable increase of 141 from the previous year and 26 more than the record set in 2021. This surge in billionaire numbers reflects the growing economic power and influence of the world’s wealthiest individuals.
Despite economic uncertainties and market fluctuations, billionaires are richer than ever, with their combined wealth reaching $14.2 trillion—an increase of $2 trillion from 2023 and $1.1 trillion above the previous record. Much of this growth is attributed to the top 20 billionaires, who added a staggering $700 billion to their wealth since 2023. Notably, the United States leads the pack with a record 813 billionaires, collectively worth $5.7 trillion.
China retains its position as the second-largest hub of billionaire wealth, with 473 individuals (including Hong Kong) amassing a combined fortune of $1.7 trillion. Despite challenges such as weak consumer spending and a real estate downturn, China’s billionaire population remains resilient, underscoring the nation’s economic resilience.
India’s billionaire community is also on the rise, with 200 individuals now holding billionaire status—a testament to the country’s burgeoning economic growth and entrepreneurial spirit.
At the helm of the billionaires’ ranking sits Bernard Arnault, the chairman of luxury conglomerate LVMH, with an estimated fortune of $233 billion. Arnault’s wealth surged by $22 billion from the previous year, driven by the stellar performance of LVMH’s portfolio of prestigious brands.
Notable newcomers to the billionaires’ club include Andrea Pignataro, the founder of financial software firm ION Group, and Todd Graves, the founder of Raising Cane’s fast-food chain. These fresh faces highlight the diverse range of industries and entrepreneurial ventures driving billionaire wealth accumulation.
