Strategic Move at ChangXin Memory Technology (CXMT)
In response to the proactive stance of Chinese memory enterprises in gearing up for competition, reports from TechNews have surfaced indicating a significant development: Zhou Meisheng, previously assistant to SMIC’s co-CEO Liang Mengsong, has assumed the role of Head of the Technical Research and Development Center at ChangXin Memory Technology (CXMT).
Zhou Meisheng brings with her a wealth of experience, having served as the Chief Technology Officer at Lam Research in China, a renowned global research and development equipment technology firm. Prior to her tenure at Lam Research, she held key positions at various semiconductor companies, including Chartered Semiconductor (Singapore), UMC, and GlobalFoundries.
Her journey continued at SMIC, where, in 2017, she held the position of Executive Vice President of Research and Development, reporting directly to co-CEO Liang Mengsong. Notably, she played an instrumental role as Liang Mengsong’s right-hand assistant in spearheading SMIC’s initiatives in advanced processes. Her retirement from SMIC in 2022, along with her resignation from all positions, sparked widespread speculation.
Meanwhile, CXMT has been making strides in technological advancement. By the conclusion of 2023, CXMT’s official website heralded the development of China’s inaugural LPDDR5 DRAM chip. The LPDDR5 series unveiled by CXMT included variants such as 12GB LPDDR5, 12GB LPDDR5 with POP packaging, and 6GB LPDDR5 with DSC packaging.
LPDDR5, marking the fifth generation of low-power DRAM, boasts significant enhancements over its predecessor LPDDR4X, with a 50% surge in capacity and speed, reaching a capacity of 12GB and a data transfer rate of 6,400Mbps, alongside a 30% reduction in power consumption.
Despite CXMT’s progress, it faces formidable competition. Major players such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology currently dominate the DRAM market, collectively holding more than 96% of the market share.
