Laura Chambers Steps In as the new CEO of Mozilla as Mitchell Baker Departs

Mitchell Baker announced her decision to step down as CEO of Mozilla Corporation, the company behind Firefox, to return to her role as executive chair of the non-profit software organization. Taking over as the new CEO is Laura Chambers, a seasoned tech executive who has been a member of the board of directors since 2021.

In a farewell statement, Baker expressed her intention to streamline focus and leadership in response to upcoming challenges, acknowledging the need for dedicated leadership in both Mozilla’s business operations and its broader mission.

Chambers expressed her enthusiasm for the role on LinkedIn, highlighting the ongoing efforts to foster a positive and inclusive internet environment that aligns with humanity’s aspirations for progress.

Baker’s increasing salary has drawn criticism amidst the declining market share of Firefox, Mozilla’s flagship product. Baker had previously served as CEO from 2005 to 2008 and assumed the role again in 2019 as interim chief executive before formally taking the position in 2020. Her tenure witnessed significant restructuring, including layoffs due to financial challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Critics have raised concerns about Mozilla’s financial management, citing lavish executive compensations despite organizational inefficiencies. Per Mozilla’s financial documentation, Mitchell Baker saw a rise in earnings from $5,591,406 in the preceding year to $6,903,089 in the subsequent one. Meanwhile, Mozilla’s income, predominantly sourced from Google for making Firefox the default search engine, experienced a decline from $527,585,000 to $510,389,000 during the same period.

Regarding Laura Chambers’s remuneration, Mozilla declined to disclose specifics, stating that such details are determined in collaboration with the Mozilla Corporation Board and in consideration of competitive market dynamics for talent acquisition.

Chambers, formerly involved in Mozilla’s board audit and compensation committees, will be relinquishing those responsibilities in her new capacity.
