Gallagher Re Appoints Dirk Spenner to Serve as CEO International

Gallagher Re, the reinsurance broker, has revealed the appointment of Dirk Spenner as Chief Executive Officer International, starting June 1, 2024. Spenner will succeed Tony Melia, who is set to retire after a remarkable tenure of more than 40 years.

Spenner’s journey began in 1996 at Willis Re, and his transition to Gallagher Re occurred through the 2021 acquisition. Currently overseeing the Gallagher Re EMEA business and serving as the co-head of the Global Property Practice, Spenner has played a pivotal role in the substantial growth of Gallagher Re in the region. His tenure at Gallagher Re began as a Managing Director, and within two years, he ascended to his current position.

Tony Melia, with an association dating back to 1988 at Willis Re, served as CEO of Willis Re International since 2012. Over the years, he led the International Business Unit, overseeing operations in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and emerging markets. Melia’s contributions included establishing Willis Re’s initial analytics department, creating and developing the financial modeling platform Willis iFM, and holding the position of Managing Director of European Business.

Gallagher Re’s CEO, Tom Wakefield, expressed best wishes to Dirk Spenner in his new role and extended congratulations to Tony Melia for an extraordinary career.
