Commerzbank not to Merge with Deutsche Bank
On Tuesday, Commerzbank’s CEO, Manfred Knopf, played down the possibility of a merger with Deutsche Bank, asserting that no such discussions were underway and emphasizing his commitment to maintaining the bank’s independence.
These remarks come in the midst of increasing speculation about the potential resumption of merger talks between Germany’s two major banks, a topic that had previously seen unsuccessful negotiations in 2019.
The German government holds a significant stake in Commerzbank, exceeding 15%. Addressing this, Knopf indicated that the situation surrounding the government’s potential exit from Commerzbank remains undecided, echoing a statement from the German finance ministry spokesperson last week.
In response to inquiries on the sidelines of a Die Welt-organized conference, Knopf remarked, “I think it’s more an issue for journalists and the media but not for us.”
