Revealed: US States With Largest Homeless Populations

In 2022, 582,462 individuals in the United States experienced homelessness on a single night, marking a concerning upward trend. Since 2017, there has been a 6% surge in homelessness, with a notably disproportionate number identifying as Black or indigenous, including Native Americans and Pacific Islanders. Encouragingly, there was an 11% decline in homelessness among veterans between 2020 and 2022.

Approximately six in 10 people facing homelessness in 2022 had access to emergency shelters, transitional housing programs, or safe havens, while the rest were unsheltered. Rates of unsheltered homelessness, encompassing those sleeping on the streets, in abandoned structures, and in wooded areas, are also on the rise.

While homelessness rates have decreased in nearly two dozen states in recent years, partly attributed to pandemic-related funding for housing support and human services, other states have witnessed significant increases. Vermont’s homeless population has soared by 150.5% since 2020, marking the highest increase among all states, followed by Louisiana and Maine.
