Exploring Chester And Its Treasures

If you want to see something extraordinary, you should travel to Chester in Great Britain. It is in northwest England in the Chesire region near the border with Wales. Chester is a historic city and was founded as a Roman fortress. It is one of the most well-preserved walled towns in England, and you surely don’t know that Chester’s four main streets have been around for 2000 years. Here you can walk on the castle’s walls from one side of the city to the other. Chester is one of the most popular places in Britain for an unforgettable short break. But what makes it so unique? Let’s see in this article what distinguishes Chester from other cities in England.

Chester Cathedral

The cathedral was founded in 1092 as a Benedictine abbey and was then rebuilt around 1250. It took 275 years to transform the building into the stunning Gothic-style building we see today. Chester Cathedral is a complete set of monastic buildings in England, including the Georgian Square and the ruins of Roman barracks. There you will admire the largest open green spaces within the walls.

Chester Castle and Chester City Walls

The castle, including Agricola Tower and the Inner Bailey, opens only a few times a week for visitors. Any visitor can walk the walls at any time of the day. You will walk up the walls and think you are back in time. Walking through the city walls, you will find yourself in front of the most photographed clock in the North. In the evening hours, the locals say there are ghosts of the Knights of the Olden time. Legends always add a note of mystery which is exciting for families with kids. Thankfully, you can enjoy a guided tour of the castle and the city walls of Chester.

Chester Rows

As soon as the visitor passes the Chester gate, they are in the center of the city, and they are enchanted watching the Chester Rows. Near Watergate, Northgate, and Eastgate streets, there are many shops and cafes. The second row of shops consists of the Chester Rows, which are continuous half-wooden arcades on the upper level of the shops. You can shop in the city’s wonderful market and enjoy your coffee overlooking the wonderful Chester Rows. You will also find the Grosvenor Mall, with many shops within an arcade. There are also many restaurants to eat and rest with international cuisines such as Italian, Mexican, Chinese, and Spanish. Finally, remember to visit the local market with local products.

The Roman Gardens

The Roman Gardens are very impressive to visit, and they are easily accessible from the magnificent city walls. Access to the River Dee is also possible from the gardens. It would be good to have a chocolate bar with you because you will be approached by squirrels that live in the gardens. You can take a picture of them as soon as you give them to eat since they love chocolate.

The Grosvenor Museum

On Grosvenor Street, you can visit the Grosvenor Museum. The museum has a fine collection of Roman antiquities, along with special displays depicting the life of the Roman legionnaire and the Roman fortification of Britain. The exhibits deal with themes of life and death during Roman times, including medicinal treatments and impressive collections of Contemporary Art. There are also numerous paintings and sculptures.

The River Dee

After you have enjoyed your walk through most of the city’s attractions, you can relax along the River Dee. The river is 70 miles long and runs through Wales and Chester. On the Bank of the river is the “Groves,” a paved promenade with a pavilion, restaurants, cafes, and public houses. Get on a Chester boat where you will be taken for a walk in the Chesire countryside. So enjoy the ride and prepare your cameras to capture the beautiful landscapes.

Horse Races

If you visit Chester from May to July, remember to go to see horse racing. According to official records, Chester Racecourse, known as Roodee, is the oldest Racecourse still in use in England. Horse racing in Chester dates from the early 16th century. In recent years, Chester has expanded its racing program, organizing fifteen days of competitive and quality racing. However, the primary event remains the three-day festival meeting in early May.
