Kefalonia: The Ionian Island Of The Stars
The beautiful and cosmopolitan Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea. Its main characteristics are the green landscapes that emerge in every corner, the crystal waters, and the hospitality of its inhabitants. On this island that looks like an earthly paradise full of natural beauties, you will have the opportunity for many dives, exploration of the rich seabed, excursions to picturesque villages, and evening walks by the harbors. Many Hollywood stars like Nicolas Cage, Tom Hanks, and many more have visited the place. Are you ready to wander around picturesque Kefalonia for an unforgettable holiday?
Argostoli
The capital of Kefalonia is a little city with Venetian architecture. The earthquake of 1953 destroyed many buildings; however, some retain the elements of that time. It is a vibrant, beautiful city with many options for entertainment and exploration. There are also sinkholes, a rare geological phenomenon, that is, cracks next to the sea through which water passes and crosses a large part of the island underground. Near Argostoli, you will also find several beaches for swimming, and you will have the opportunity to visit the ancient city of Krani and the Korgialenio Library, with rare manuscripts and collections.
Lixouri
On the island’s western peninsula, Lixouri is a peaceful choice for a peaceful holiday. After a great earthquake, a significant effort was made to restore the buildings, always maintaining the traditional architecture. It is famous for its delicious sweets, which you can enjoy with your coffee in the traditional pastry shop of Mavroidis in the center. Nearby is the monastery in Kipouria, where you can enjoy the magnificent sunset.
Fiskardo
This small settlement has preserved the traditional colors and architecture of the houses. The colorful houses combined with the blue of the sea and the green vegetation create an idyllic landscape. Small courtyards, elegant houses, beautiful balconies, and flower pots emerge in various places. There is nothing better than an afternoon walk in the harbor of Fiskardo, watching the sunset and enjoying seafood with ouzo by the sea.
Assos
Assos is the most picturesque and famous village in Kefalonia and is definitely worth a visit. The picturesque landscape with the green trees and the emerald waters will enchant you with the colorful houses and the boats that sail around. In Assos, you can swim in the small coves, walk in the small village and enjoy traditional Greek food in the small taverns by the sea. Of course, it is the perfect place for spectacular summer photos, so charge your mobile battery in advance.
Melissani Lake Cave
The Lake Cave of Melissani is undoubtedly the most popular attraction on the island. It is a rare geological phenomenon that enchants tourists lucky to see it up close. It is located near Sami, and access is by boat. The top of the cave has collapsed so that the sun’s rays penetrate it and create impressive flashes in the blue waters. It is best to visit it at noon when the sun is in the center, and the light created is magnificent.
The top 4 beaches on the island
- Myrtos: It is located 30 kilometers from Argostoli and is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, but also in the whole of Greece. Cliffs and steep slopes surround the beach with turquoise waters and white pebbles. It is ideal for staying from morning until sunset and taking many photos for Instagram. A part of it is organized with sunbeds, but a large part remains untouched, increasing its natural beauty.
- Xi: Xi Beach is near Lixouri. Its main characteristic is the reddish brown sand that contains clay with healing properties for the skin. It is one of the few beaches in Kefalonia with fine and soft sand and is excellent for families with children due to the shallow waters. If you are a fan of water sports, here you will find several options, such as canoeing, pedaling, etc.
- Antisamos: This sheltered beach is located near Melissani and is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. It also has trees that provide natural shade. It is suitable for relaxation since it is a calm beach with an unreal landscape. The blue of the sea harmonizes with the green of the vegetation and the white of the pebbles.
- Makris Gialos: Near Argostoli, there is Makris Gialos, a fairly famous large beach. It is organized, but there is enough space to spread your towel on the sand. The waters are clear, the sand is golden, and the vegetation at the back of the beach is very dense. The beach bars offer drinks and food while they play loud music creating an extremely fun summer atmosphere. Here, too, there is an opportunity to rent water sports equipment.
