Best 5 Icelandic Universities You Should Know

  1. University of Iceland
    One of the oldest educational Icelandic institutions, the University of Iceland can be found in the capital city of Reyjavik. It was founded in the year 1911 as a small school and ultimately became what it is right now. Relying on the strength of 25 faculties, the university offers courses in a number of disciplines such as natural sciences, engineering, teacher education, social sciences, law, and medicine. Operated by the university are as many as 60 research institutes and 7 rural research stations such as the Social Science Research Institute and Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages. It is the top-rated university in the country and is credited to have produced many remarkable personalities in myriad fields.

  2. Reykjavik University
    Strongly invested in the field of science and technology, Reykjavik University is the largest private university in the country. Its academic organization comprises 4 schools namely, the School of Computer Science, School of Science and Engineering, School of Business, and School of Law. There is also a school with the School of Science and Engineering called the Iceland School for Energy that engages in research activities pertaining to sustainable energy. In order to facilitate research into its focus areas, it has undertaken several partnership programs such as with the University of Camerino for offering a double degree program in Computer Science.
  3. University of Akureyri
    Situated in the namesake city, the University of Akureyri is a famous public university that was established in the year 1987. Presently, its academic programs include those in health sciences, business and science, and humanities and social sciences.  In addition, there are a number of research institutes established and monitored by the university. These institutes include the Research and Development Centre of UNAK, Research Centre on Children’s Literature, Research Centre for Health Science at UNAK, Research Centre Against Violence, and Fisheries Science Centre. Yearly, the university conducts exchange programs receiving students from all over the world. These exchange programs include Nordplus, Erasmus, and MoUs between universities.
  4. Bifröst University
    Bifröst University was founded way back in the year 1918 and is presently one of the most respected universities in the country. The university started as a business school, however, with time, it expanded its courses to different fields including social sciences. Courses are offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition to these regular degree programs, there are distance learning programs. In the year 2019, the university started a new master’s program in the international political economy whose mode of instruction is English. However, this course is administered online. Like other universities mentioned in the list, Bifröst University also conducts student exchange programs throughout the year.
  5. Hólar University College
    A very important historical center in Iceland, Hólar University College started in the year 1106. However, it was only in the year 2007 that it became a full-fledged university. Due to its long legacy, Hólar University College is a revered institution not only in Iceland but also in Europe. Presently, there are 3 academic departments here: Department of Aquaculture and Fish Biology, Department of Equine Studies, and Department of Tourism Studies. There are also many student exchange programs here such as the one with the University of Guelph, Canada. It is also a dedicated member of the Erasmus Student Exchange programs.
