What inspired you to pursue a career involving both business and invention?
Growing up in the creative and often challenging environment of the Florida Keys really sparked my interest in how things work and how they could be improved. My father, who I now co-own CDI Utilities with, was always tinkering and coming up with solutions to everyday problems. This environment nurtured my inventive spirit. Seeing the tangible impact of innovative solutions on our community made it clear to me early on that blending business with invention was not only fulfilling but also crucial.
As a young inventor with several patents, can you share what your invention process typically looks like?
The process starts with identifying a need. This could be something I encounter in my daily life or a larger issue our utility company faces. From there, it’s about brainstorming and sketching initial ideas, no matter how rough. I often lean on electronics and leverage my piloting experience for inspiration. Prototyping follows, which can be a mix of exciting breakthroughs and frustrating setbacks. After refining the design and ensuring it works under various conditions, filing for patents is the next step to protect the invention.
Could you talk about a particularly challenging moment in your career and how you overcame it?
One of the more defining moments was the decision to fold my cloud computing company. It was a tough call because it was a venture I believed in deeply. However, the financial metrics just didn’t make sense anymore. Overcoming that involved a lot of self-reflection and reassessment of what I define as success. It taught me resilience and the importance of flexibility in business. What helped me move forward was focusing on learning from that experience and applying those lessons in other areas of my business endeavors.
In what ways do you integrate your passion for flying into your business practices?
Flying teaches you about the importance of preparation, checks, and balances, and this is something I bring into the boardroom as well. The discipline required to be a pilot, from planning your route to adjusting to changing conditions, parallels the dynamics of running a business. It’s about having a plan but also being ready to pivot and adapt as required.
How do you stay motivated and continue to innovate in your field?
Staying motivated isn’t too hard when you love what you do. I believe in the idea of making your vocation a vacation. This philosophy keeps me excited about tackling daily challenges. Also, I set clear, written goals, both long-term and short-term, and regularly review them. This not only keeps my objectives clear but also gives me a roadmap to innovate purposefully.
Can you describe one of your recent projects at CDI Utilities?
Recently, we’ve been working on integrating more sustainable practices into our operations. This involves everything from exploring renewable energy options to optimizing our existing infrastructure for better efficiency. We’re also looking into smart technology to improve how we manage utilities, which ties back into my interest in electronics and provides a great foundation for inventive solutions.
What role does philanthropy play in your life?
Philanthropy is a way to give back to the community that has given me so much. Working with organizations like the Rotary I Wish Foundation and the Humane Society of Florida is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about donations but also about active engagement and making a real difference in people’s lives.
As someone involved in technology, what emerging trend excites you the most?
The potential of AI and machine learning to transform traditional industries is particularly exciting. These technologies offer ways to do things more efficiently and can lead to significant improvements in areas like utility management, where predictive maintenance and energy management can be revolutionized.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and inventors?
Never underestimate the value of resilience. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Keep your goals in sight, write them down, and don’t shy away from revisiting and revising them as needed. Also, surround yourself with a good team. You can’t do everything alone, and having a supportive team can make all the difference.
Looking ahead, what’s next for you and CDI Utilities?
We are focusing on expanding our reach and impact. This includes not only geographic expansion but also extending our services to include more innovative and environmentally sustainable solutions. Personally, I’m always on the lookout for the next challenge, the next problem to solve. So, in many ways, it’s about continuing the journey of innovation and excellent service we’ve started.
