Coca-Cola Recalls Drinks in Europe Over Chlorine Contamination
Coca-Cola has issued a recall for several of its beverages in parts of Europe due to “higher levels” of chlorine found in the products. The recall primarily affects Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, according to a company statement.
The impacted products include Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid, with the issue specifically tied to a small batch of imported cans. The affected items include Appletiser, Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero, with production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE.
Coca-Cola confirmed that it has not received any consumer complaints about the issue but stated that authorities in the affected countries have been alerted and that the company is cooperating with them.
Anne Gravett from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced that an investigation had been launched to assess the matter. Gravett explained that any unsafe findings would lead to action to remove the products and inform consumers.
Exposure to elevated levels of chlorine is known to cause health problems, including thyroid issues, particularly in children and infants. Excess chlorine ingestion can lead to symptoms such as vomiting and a reduced ability of the blood to absorb oxygen.
The elevated chlorine levels were detected during routine quality testing at Coca-Cola’s manufacturing facility in Ghent, Belgium.
