Survey Finds Americans Unaware of AI’s Role in Everyday Digital Products
While artificial intelligence (AI) continues to dominate conversations in technology and business, a new study reveals that most Americans remain unaware that the digital tools they use regularly are powered by AI. The report, released by Gallup in partnership with AI investor Telescope, found that nearly all Americans use AI-enabled products on a weekly basis, yet 64% are unaware of their reliance on this technology.
The survey, which polled 4,000 U.S. adults, asked participants whether they had used AI-enabled products in the past week and separately listed popular apps and services such as Siri, Google Maps, Instagram, Netflix, and eBay. While 99% of respondents acknowledged using at least one of these platforms, only one-third recognized that they were engaging with AI.
Although many respondents identified that digital assistants like Siri and Alexa rely on AI, fewer realized the same about weather apps, mapping tools, or streaming services. The findings highlight a gap between the rapid advancements of AI and the public’s awareness of its presence in everyday technology.
Despite AI’s significant integration into digital products, much of its influence operates behind the scenes. Unlike the more visible aspects of AI, such as conversational assistants, technologies like algorithms, predictive analytics, and advertising optimization quietly shape the user experience across countless platforms. While businesses emphasize AI milestones such as progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI) to shareholders and the media, these subtler applications continue to infiltrate nearly every product Americans use, often unnoticed by the public.
