Sharen Groppell: Building Legacies and Inspiring Growth in Insurance and Life
Sharen Groppell, hailing from Houston, Texas, has crafted an impressive career in the insurance and risk management industry. With over three decades of experience, she has risen to become the Executive Vice President at Marsh McLennan Agency, leading the Construction and Surety divisions in the Houston office. A mother, leader, and outdoor enthusiast, Sharen seamlessly blends her professional achievements with her personal passions, creating a life defined by purpose, resilience, and connection.
What inspired you to pursue a career in insurance and risk management?
When I was younger, I had a natural curiosity about how businesses operate and sustain themselves. Insurance felt like the perfect intersection of problem-solving and relationship-building, two things I deeply value. Early in my career, I realized that managing risk isn’t just about policies or premiums—it’s about giving people peace of mind and enabling them to take bold steps forward. That’s what motivates me every day.
How has your experience at Elsey & Associates shaped your leadership style today?
Running Elsey & Associates was a transformative period for me. It taught me the importance of adaptability and trust. I had to wear multiple hats—strategist, mentor, and even crisis manager at times. Those years helped me refine a leadership style that’s collaborative yet decisive. At Marsh McLennan Agency, I bring that same mindset: empowering my team while maintaining a clear vision for our goals.
How do you balance being a mother with your demanding career?
Garrett and Gregory have always been my anchors. They remind me why I work hard, but they also help me keep things in perspective. Balance isn’t about splitting time equally; it’s about being present and intentional with the moments I have. Whether it’s a family dinner or a weekend hike, I prioritize quality over quantity. It’s a dynamic process, but my family keeps me grounded.
What do you find most rewarding about working with clients in the construction and surety sectors?
Construction is such a dynamic field—it’s about building something tangible that will last. Helping clients navigate the complexities of insurance and surety bonds feels like I’m part of their journey in creating those legacies. Knowing that our work supports their success, stability, and growth is incredibly rewarding. It’s about more than contracts; it’s about partnership.
How has your love for the outdoors influenced your approach to life and work?
Being outdoors teaches you resilience and patience. Whether it’s hiking up a steep trail or enjoying a quiet moment in nature, you learn to appreciate progress and find solutions in simplicity. I bring that same philosophy to my work—taking challenges step by step and appreciating the process as much as the outcome. It’s about staying grounded and moving forward with purpose.
What advice would you give to women aspiring to leadership roles in traditionally male-dominated industries like insurance and construction?
Be unapologetically confident in your abilities. It’s easy to feel like you need to prove yourself, but remember that your unique perspective is your strength. Build a strong network of mentors and peers who uplift you, and never shy away from tough conversations. Leadership isn’t about fitting into a mold—it’s about defining your own.
What drives your passion for mentoring others in your field?
I’ve had incredible mentors throughout my career who believed in me and challenged me to grow. Giving that back is a privilege. Seeing someone I’ve mentored succeed—whether it’s a promotion or tackling a complex project—brings me immense joy. It’s a reminder that leadership isn’t just about your own success; it’s about lifting others as you climb.
Where do you see the future of risk management heading, and how are you preparing for it?
The industry is evolving rapidly with advancements in technology and data analytics. These tools are enabling us to provide more customized and proactive solutions for our clients. At Marsh McLennan Agency, we’re investing in innovation and training to stay ahead of these trends. But at the end of the day, relationships remain the core of this business, and that’s something I’ll always prioritize.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind—both personally and professionally?
Professionally, I want to be remembered as someone who genuinely cared about clients, colleagues, and the industry. Personally, I hope my sons see me as someone who lived with integrity and pursued her passions wholeheartedly. If I can inspire others to lead with purpose and cherish life’s journey, then I’ve done something right.
