Indonesia Partners with Regional Nations to Combat Illegal Fishing
Indonesia has joined forces with 10 countries to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, aiming to enhance regional cooperation to protect fishery resources and ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems. This collaboration was announced by Pung Nugroho Saksono, Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Supervision at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, as reported by the national news agency Antara.
The cooperation is part of the Regional Plan of Action to Promote Responsible Fishing Practices and Combat IUU Fishing in the Region (RPOA-IUU). Member countries involved include Indonesia, Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
RPOA serves as a regional platform comprising 11 countries committed to preventing and combating IUU fishing while promoting sustainable management of marine and fishery resources. Saksono noted in a December 19 statement that the initiative will focus on improving the data-sharing mechanism among RPOA-IUU members.
Delegates from the 11 nations convened to develop a more organized and effective system for sharing information to tackle IUU fishing. The countries agreed to exchange six key types of data:
- Information on protected and regulated species
- Details of relevant regulations
- Management plans and target market data
- Lists of vessels involved in IUU fishing
- Vessel movements across national borders
- Vessel details and licensing information, along with records of IUU fishing incidents
This enhanced collaboration is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve marine biodiversity and sustain fisheries in the region.
