How to Transform Your Office Into a Three-Dimensional Vision Board
Being at the head of a company comes with its own unique priorities, from staying on top of the day-to-day challenges that come with running a business to striving for innovative ways to stand out in an increasingly competitive market. Well, what if I told you that ensuring your office is set-up for good Feng Shui can be as important to the success of your business as making the right networking contacts or putting together the perfect five-year business plan?
Feng Shui is an Ancient Chinese energy system all about maintaining a positive flow of energy, or “chi,” in your home and workspace. Simply put, by paying attention to how you position your belongings and yourself, Feng Shui allows you to transform your office into a three-dimensional vision board.
With over 30 years of experience as a Feng Shui Master, I’ve seen firsthand what can happen when your working environment is perfectly aligned with your goals. If you too want to tap into the unique manifestation power of your environment, here are my top hacks to create a CEO-worthy office, even when you’re working remotely.
Sit Like a Leader
Are you able to see the opportunities from the Universe as they walk through the door, or do you sit at your desk with your back to them? There’s a principle in Feng Shui known as “the power position,” which refers to the way you position yourself in your space so that you’re the most powerful person in the room. The first and most important rule of the power position is that you must be able to see the door to the room without having to turn your neck.
Why is this important? From a Feng Shui perspective, you want to make sure you’re in the path of the incoming flow of energy. You want to see all the opportunities that enter through the door, and you want to make sure you’re making yourself accessible to the incoming abundance-attracting energy flow.
If you’re not able to position your desk so that you’re facing the door, place a small mirror in front of you so that the door is reflected in it. This way, you’ll still be able to keep an eye on what’s coming in and out.
The second rule of the power position is that the further away you sit from the door, the more important you present yourself as being. In most standard office layouts, the employees who sit closest to the door tend to be receptionists, secretaries, or administrative assistants, and the most senior members of the team sit farthest away. As a rule of thumb, you want to make sure there is at least 3 to 10 feet (roughly 1 to 3 meters) of space between you and the door.
In regard to your chair, the rules of power position say that you must be sitting in a high-backed chair with armrests to ensure plenty of support for both your back and neck. Not only will this keep your body from experiencing aches and pains as a result of being hunched over, you’ll also feel supported emotionally, too. When our back and neck are exposed, we’re more likely to make decisions out of fear because subconsciously we feel unsafe. However, when our back and neck are protected, we can make more careful, considered decisions based on logic — a must for the cutting-edge business professional.
Activate Your Personal Success Direction
As part of my unique Feng Shui approach, I take into an account a person’s Personal Energy Number. This is a number from one to nine and is based on your date of birth and your birth sex. Each Personal Energy Number has four best “Personal Directions” where the energy in each room in your home is the most powerful for you. There’s a Personal Direction for attracting success, good health, good relationships, and wisdom.
You can find out your Personal Energy Number with the free Marie Diamond app and use the Diamond Compass to locate your Success Direction in your office.
Begin by ensuring that your Success Direction is clear of mess, clutter, and trash cans. Make a quick tidy-up of this area to ensure you’re not symbolically “throwing your success away” in the trash.
Then you can begin to “activate” your Personal Direction by displaying symbols, images, and objects that represent your business goals and vision for success. They can be related to powerful people you admire, the goals you have for your company, or anything that represents you living your best, most successful life. You can display these items either on a pinboard hung up on the wall of your Success Direction, or on a table placed in this direction. These symbols can include:
- The logo of your company and your current marketing material.
- Images of products or services you offer — for example, the covers of books you publish, a company catalog, or photos of the products you manufacture.
- Images of successful people in your profession or who have achieved goals similar to yours.
- Images of your business idols and heroes or copies of their biographies.
- Any industry awards that you’ve won, or ones that you’d like to win.
Not only will this help you to stay focused on the job at hand, it will act as a reminder of what your company does and what makes it unique. You’d be surprised at how many business owners lack a basic sense of product knowledge, so this will help you to maintain a visual connection to your business. If you find that there are some items that aren’t selling well, or if you’re looking to launch a new product, you can also display them in your Success Direction to help to raise awareness.
These Feng Shui activations can be especially helpful when you work remotely or travel for business. Even if you don’t have your normal desk set-up, placing your company logo or product images in your Success Direction can help you to maintain that business mentality even when you’re on the go.
Keep the Clutter to a Minimum
A cluttered environment represents a cluttered mind, so take some time to straighten up your office at the beginning and end of each day. Keep your desk free from clutter since any mess, even if it’s in your peripheral vision, will affect your concentration. Since your office should be a space dedicated to your work, keep just one photo of your family on your desk and display a photo of your work team in a gold-colored frame. This will help to attract better teamwork and collaboration and show the Universe that you hold your team to a “gold standard.”
Working From Home
With more people working remotely, rooms often serve multi-purpose functions. You might have your work desk in your bedroom, or use your dining table as a desk. This is a potential pitfall since the merging of different energies (i.e. sleep energy with work energy) can cause energetic disharmony. If you can see your desk from your bed, it’ll be hard for you to have a peaceful night’s sleep when you have that visual reminder of all the work you have left to do! To preserve harmony and maintain balance, you can use fold-out screens, room dividers or curtains to create a division of space and hide away your desk while you’re sleeping.
Similarly, if you use your dining table as a desk, you can use the same Feng Shui principle to help enforce your work/life balance. Have a storage box solely for your work-related papers, books, and your work laptop so that everything can be put away, out of sight, at the end of the working day. If you use a dining table for your desk, clear it from any non-work related items beforehand and spray some lavender mist to purify the air. Then light a scented candle fragranced with pine, jasmine, or black pepper to improve your concentration and to create a focused working atmosphere.
Give these Feng Shui tips a try, and you may be surprised by the results. By putting the right items in the right places and by activating your Personal Directions you can use the flow of energy to manifest your goals, attract abundance, and make your business dreams a reality.
