China’s Visa-Free Entry for Citizens of Nine Additional Countries

Starting November 8, citizens from nine more countries will be eligible for visa-free entry to China under a 15-day exemption policy previously granted to nationals of 18 countries. This extension, confirmed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, will allow citizens of Andorra, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, Slovakia, and South Korea to enter China without a visa.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, this visa-free policy will run from November 8, 2024, until December 31, 2025, for ordinary passport holders from these nine newly eligible countries. The exemption permits a maximum stay of 15 days for business, tourism, family visits, and transit purposes.

China’s aim in expanding visa-free access is to revive its tourism sector, significantly impacted by the pandemic, and to promote economic and cultural exchanges with these nations. As a result, the total number of countries with visa-free access to China for short visits has increased to 27, allowing tourists and business travelers from these countries to enter and stay in China for up to 15 days.

The countries currently eligible for this visa-free arrangement include:

  • Andorra*
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Cyprus
  • Denmark*
  • Finland*
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland*
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Liechtenstein*
  • Luxembourg
  • Malaysia
  • Monaco*
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway*
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovakia*
  • South Korea*
  • Spain
  • Switzerland

*Indicates eligibility as of November 8, 2024.

To benefit from this visa exemption, travelers must have a valid passport for the entire duration of their stay, along with relevant documentation to support the purpose and duration of their trip, such as an invitation letter, return ticket, or hotel reservation. This policy allows visa-free entry through all points of entry by air, land, or sea, with stays permitted until midnight on the 15th day after arrival. Although there is no limit on the frequency of visits under this waiver, final entry approval remains at the discretion of immigration officers at the border.
