Ravi Ahuja to Succeed Tony Vinciquerra as CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2025
Sony Group Corporation and Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) have announced that Tony Vinciquerra, SPE’s Chairman and CEO, will step down from his role as CEO, with Ravi Ahuja set to succeed him as President and CEO effective January 2, 2025. Vinciquerra will continue in a non-executive capacity as Chairman until December 2025, providing advisory support. Ahuja, currently SPE’s Chairman of Global Television Studios and President and COO, will report directly to Sony Group Corporation Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, as well as Sony Group Corporation President, COO, and CFO Hiroki Totoki.
Yoshida praised Vinciquerra’s leadership, highlighting the significant transformation SPE has undergone during his tenure. He attributed SPE’s success to Vinciquerra’s strategic insights, experience in the entertainment industry, and effective leadership, which positioned the company as a critical player within Sony Group’s broader corporate strategy. Yoshida expressed his gratitude for Vinciquerra’s dedication to SPE and his contributions across the Sony group, emphasizing the importance of his guidance in driving SPE’s ability to capitalize on intellectual property (IP) and pursue synergies across Sony’s entertainment and technology divisions.
Yoshida also commended Ahuja’s contributions since joining SPE in 2021, noting that Ahuja had been central to navigating the challenges of the current media landscape under Vinciquerra’s leadership. With Ahuja’s extensive background at some of the world’s top entertainment companies, Yoshida expressed confidence in Ahuja’s ability to steer SPE toward continued growth and success in his new role.
Vinciquerra, who joined SPE in 2017, played a pivotal role in the company’s turnaround, achieving five consecutive years of profit growth by strengthening the film slate, reshaping SPE’s television business, and making strategic acquisitions such as Crunchyroll in 2021. His decision to divest most of SPE’s international cable networks and avoid entering the oversaturated streaming market with a general entertainment service helped maintain the company’s profitability during a time of industry upheaval. Under his leadership, SPE also navigated major challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and the historic SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes of 2023, which disrupted film and television production across the industry. Despite these hurdles, Vinciquerra leaves SPE in a strong competitive position within the entertainment sector.
Reflecting on his time at SPE, Vinciquerra expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the company through both challenges and successes. He spoke of the pride he felt working with his talented colleagues and highlighted the passion and resilience that had defined the company’s culture. Vinciquerra also expressed his thanks to Sony leaders Kazuo Hirai, Kenichiro Yoshida, and Hiroki Totoki for their trust and support throughout his tenure. He expressed confidence in Ahuja’s leadership and SPE’s future, believing that the company is well-positioned for continued success under Ahuja’s guidance.
Ravi Ahuja, who joined SPE in 2021, has overseen the production businesses of Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and the studio’s operations in India as Chairman of Global Television Studios. He also led SPE’s mergers and acquisitions, including the purchase of Industrial Media, Bad Wolf, and Pixomondo, as well as the sale of GSN Games to Scopely. Ahuja brings a wealth of experience from his time at Walt Disney Television, where he served as President of Business Operations and CFO, as well as his previous roles at Fox Networks Group and Virgin Entertainment Group.
Ahuja expressed his excitement about taking on the CEO role at SPE, recognizing the company’s iconic legacy and strategic position in the entertainment industry. He acknowledged Vinciquerra’s mentorship and leadership, thanking him for his guidance over the years. Ahuja also conveyed his gratitude to Yoshida and Totoki for entrusting him with this significant responsibility and expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunities that lie ahead for SPE and its global team.
