UK to Roll Out Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for Visa-Exempt Travelers

The UK government has announced the timeline for the introduction of its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will be mandatory for visa-exempt travelers starting in 2025. This post-Brexit measure aims to enhance border security and better manage migration.

Starting January 8, 2025, citizens from Canada, the United States, and 47 other countries and territories will need an ETA to enter the UK. European nationals will be required to hold an ETA beginning April 2, 2025.

The UK first launched its ETA system in November 2023 with a pilot phase for travelers from Qatar. In February 2024, citizens from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan (now removed) were added.

As of November 27, 2024, nationals from 49 countries can start applying for ETA, which will be mandatory for travel from January 8, 2025. From March 5, 2025, European nationals can begin applying for ETA, which will be required for travel from April 2, 2025.

Key Details

The ETA costs approximately $13 and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, allowing multiple trips to the UK. It permits stays of up to 6 months for tourism, business, short-term study, or transit.

Applications can be made on the UK government portal or via the UK ETA mobile app. The UK’s ETA system marks a significant step in controlling its borders while allowing visa-free travelers continued ease of access under stricter security measures.
