OpenMinds’s Founder on Malaysia’s AI Strategy Poised to Lead Asia Pacific
Malaysia’s strategic efforts to develop a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) framework, fueled by government initiatives and collaborations between the public and private sectors, are positioning the country as a leader in AI adoption within the Asia Pacific region. According to Jan Wong, the founder of digital consulting startup OM Connect Sdn Bhd (OpenMinds), Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap sets clear objectives for integrating AI across various industries, including healthcare, education, and manufacturing. This roadmap, he noted, could serve as a valuable model for other countries in the region.
Wong emphasized that Malaysia’s initiatives go beyond just policy-making. He highlighted efforts to promote AI literacy, foster co-research, and provide funding for AI startups, all of which offer significant advantages that other nations could replicate to bolster their own AI development.
Wong also pointed out that Malaysia is already taking significant steps to establish itself as a leader in ethical AI use in the region. He believes the country is on the right track, with critical actions including the development of a national AI strategy, attracting foreign technology investments, funding ethical research, and offering grants and tax incentives to businesses focusing on ethical AI. Building partnerships with the private sector and academic institutions is another key component of Malaysia’s approach.
Moreover, Wong underscored the importance of promoting AI education and ethical practices within the region, stating that consistent and well-governed implementation of these initiatives could solidify Malaysia’s position as a regional leader in ethical AI. He expressed hope that these efforts would extend to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), ensuring that AI growth is inclusive and not confined to a few large corporations.
When discussing how businesses in Malaysia should prepare for impending AI regulations, Wong advised companies to begin by thoroughly assessing their current use of AI tools. He stressed the importance of fully understanding how AI is integrated into their operations, including documenting the processes it affects, the data sources and storage methods involved, and any potential biases or transparency issues. Such documentation, he suggested, is crucial for compliance and for preventing future problems.
Wong also recommended that businesses prioritize data privacy by carefully reviewing how data is collected, stored, and utilized and ensuring that clear disclaimers and terms of use are in place. Understanding AI’s role in data processing, he added, allows businesses to develop appropriate consumer disclosures.
Given the rapid pace of industry change, Wong highlighted the necessity for businesses to stay current with regulations from both Malaysian authorities and international AI bodies. He further suggested that companies consider appointing a dedicated consultant or team to manage AI-related matters, ensure compliance, optimize AI solutions, and build internal capabilities. This proactive approach, he concluded, would support business growth and facilitate the effective integration of AI.
