Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Dies From Cancer at 56

Susan Wojcicki, the former CEO of YouTube, has passed away at the age of 56. The news was shared by her husband, Dennis Troper, who revealed that Wojcicki succumbed to a long battle with lung cancer.

Wojcicki’s academic journey began at Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Literature in 1990. She later pursued further studies, obtaining a Master of Science in Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1993 and a Master of Business Administration from UCLA in 1998.

Wojcicki joined Google in 1999, becoming one of the company’s earliest employees. Her tenure saw her rise through the ranks, culminating in her appointment as the CEO of YouTube in 2014, a position she held for nine years. She played a pivotal role in Google’s acquisition of YouTube in 2006, a landmark deal valued at $1.65 billion. In 2023, Wojcicki stepped down from her role to prioritize her family, health, and personal interests, taking on an advisory role at Google’s parent company, Alphabet.

Reflecting on her career, Wojcicki once remarked that her decision to join Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the co-founders of Google, was one of the best choices she ever made. She left an indelible mark on the tech industry, steering YouTube through a period of significant growth and change.

Dennis Troper expressed deep sorrow as he announced the loss of his wife, who he described as a brilliant, loving mother and a cherished friend to many. Wojcicki had been a significant force in their lives, and her passing left a profound void in both their family and the wider community. He asked for the public’s thoughts and support as the family copes with this difficult time.

The family tragedy was compounded by the loss of her 19-year-old son, Marco Troper, earlier this year. Marco, a student at UC Berkeley, died from an accidental overdose in February. His passing was confirmed by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, which reported that high levels of substances, including cocaine and alprazolam, were found in his system. Marco’s grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, also expressed the family’s deep grief, describing her grandson as an exceptionally kind and intelligent young man.

Susan Wojcicki’s passing marks the end of an era in the tech industry, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and leadership. Her contributions to Google and YouTube have had a lasting impact, and she will be remembered for her pioneering spirit and dedication to her work and family.
