“Inside Out 2” Dominates 2024 Box Office, Overtaking “Dune: Part Two”

“Inside Out 2” has surged to the top of the 2024 box office charts, surpassing “Dune: Part Two” to claim the highest-grossing film title of the year. The animated sequel has amassed a staggering $1.2 billion, making it the fifth highest-grossing animated film globally and the tenth highest at the international box office. Additionally, Pixar and Disney’s creation has become the top-grossing film in Mexico and the second highest in Latin America, only trailing the final “Avengers” film.

“Inside Out 2” continues the story from the 2015 original by Peter Docter, which followed 11-year-old Riley and her five emotions: Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger. In this sequel, new emotions such as Anxiety join the now-older protagonist. Directed by Kelsey Mann with a screenplay by returning writer Meg LeFauve, the film has captivated audiences worldwide.

Meanwhile, “Despicable Me 4” made an impressive debut last week, grossing $230 million in just five days. Its total international earnings reached $107 million, while the domestic box office contributed $123 million, significantly boosted by the July 4 holiday weekend. The production cost for the film was $100 million, in contrast to the typical $200 million budget for Pixar and Disney films, including “Inside Out 2.”

The “Despicable Me” franchise, which began in 2010, now includes three sequels, two Minions spinoffs, and a series of short films. It holds the record as the highest-grossing animated franchise in history, with total earnings of $4.7 billion, followed by the “Shrek” franchise with $4 billion.
