Aston Martin Appoints Andy Cowell as New CEO
Aston Martin has announced the appointment of Andy Cowell, former Mercedes Power Unit chief, as their new Group Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Martin Whitmarsh. Cowell, known for his pivotal role in developing the V6 hybrid power units that secured six consecutive double world titles for Mercedes, will take on his new role starting October 1.
Martin Whitmarsh, who has been instrumental in Aston Martin’s recent growth, will hand over responsibilities before the end of the year. Whitmarsh’s tenure saw significant achievements, including establishing a partnership with Honda and delivering the state-of-the-art AMR Technology Campus at Silverstone.
Aston Martin is intensifying its efforts to become a World Championship-winning team, with substantial investments from owner Lawrence Stroll in a cutting-edge facility, which will feature a new wind tunnel. Cowell’s arrival is particularly timely as the team prepares for a works partnership with Japanese manufacturer Honda in 2026, coinciding with the introduction of new Power Unit regulations that emphasize 100% sustainable fuels.
Lawrence Stroll expressed his gratitude to Whitmarsh for his contributions over the past three years and welcomed Cowell, highlighting the synergy between Cowell’s leadership and the team’s strategic partnerships with Honda and Aramco. This collaboration is expected to drive Aston Martin towards its championship aspirations.
Cowell expressed his enthusiasm for joining Aston Martin, emphasizing his long-standing passion for F1 and his eagerness to work with the talented team at Aston Martin Aramco. He looks forward to contributing to the team’s success as they transition to a full works team with Honda and Aramco in 2026.
Whitmarsh, who brought Cowell to Mercedes HPP in 2004, praised his successor’s achievements and anticipated his significant impact on Aston Martin Aramco. With Cowell’s expertise and the completion of the AMR Technology Campus, Whitmarsh is confident in the team’s future success and plans to focus on other projects knowing that the foundation for Aston Martin’s F1 success is solidly in place.
