Steve McCann Appointed CEO & MD of Star Entertainment Group

Australia’s Star Entertainment Group has named Steve McCann, formerly of Crown Resorts, as its new CEO and Managing Director, as part of a strategic initiative to maintain the casino license for The Star Sydney. McCann’s appointment will be effective from July 8, 2024, pending regulatory approvals.

McCann, who significantly contributed to Crown’s remediation efforts before its acquisition by The Blackstone Group in 2022, is the second major executive from Crown to join Star, following Jeannie Mok’s recent appointment as Group COO. Crown, under the leadership of Ciarán Carruthers, was recently deemed fit to operate its Melbourne and Sydney casinos again.

McCann stated that he was looking forward to joining The Star at a crucial time, recognizing the complex issues and challenges the company needed to address. He committed to working with the Board and stakeholders to drive change, restore confidence, and achieve a sustainable resolution.

Star Chairman Anne Ward expressed the Board’s satisfaction with securing McCann, emphasizing his extensive experience and market respect. She noted that his time with Crown and his previous leadership role at LendLease provided him with the necessary credentials to lead The Star’s remediation program. Ward highlighted McCann’s capability to collaborate with various stakeholders and lead significant transformational changes and cultural renewal, which she believed would be crucial for rebuilding trust and expediting the sustainable transformation of The Star.

McCann’s background includes over a decade as Group CEO of the construction giant LendLease, underscoring his extensive experience and leadership capabilities.
