Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer’s Contract Renewed Through 2028

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has extended the contract of CEO Bill Kramer, ensuring his leadership through July 2028. Kramer, who assumed the role in June 2022 following Dawn Hudson’s departure, had his contract renewed ahead of its original 2025 expiration date.

In his extended tenure, Kramer will oversee all facets of the Academy’s operations, which includes managing over 700 employees across Los Angeles, New York, and London. His responsibilities encompass leading the expansion and engagement of the Academy’s global membership, overseeing all awards programs, including the Oscars, and directing educational and emerging talent initiatives. Kramer will also manage the Academy’s extensive collection and preservation efforts alongside its regular screenings and public programs.

Kramer’s leadership has been described as dynamic and transformational by Academy President Janet Yang, who emphasized his ability to broaden the Academy’s global reach and impact. Yang highlighted Kramer as the ideal person to guide the organization into its next century, underscoring the board’s confidence in his vision and capabilities.

Kramer initially joined the Academy in 2012, focusing on fundraising efforts for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. He became the museum’s director in 2020, steering its development towards showcasing a more diverse and inclusive narrative of film history. Recently, Kramer spearheaded the Academy100 revenue diversification and outreach program. This initiative aims to expand AMPAS’ global influence and secure funding ahead of the 100th Academy Awards ceremony in 2028.

Kramer’s next four years will involve addressing several critical issues, such as defining the role of the Academy Museum, tackling the decline in theatrical moviegoing, and renegotiating the Oscars’ TV deal with ABC, set to expire in 2028. The potential replacement of this deal with a less lucrative agreement poses a significant challenge for the organization.

The early renewal of Kramer’s contract reflects the Academy’s trust in his leadership and its commitment to sustaining and enhancing its influence in the global film community.
