Thailand’s Environmental Concerns: A Growing Priority in 2024

A recent Marketbuzzz survey identifies environmental issues as the foremost concern for Thais in 2024, with 30% of respondents highlighting pollution and related problems. This is closely followed by worries about rising prices at 28%. Grant Bertoli, CEO of Marketbuzzz, noted that environmental concerns and rising prices are major issues in Thailand. Despite the high level of concern, daily eco-friendly practices remain challenging, indicating a need for increased efforts toward sustainable living.

Since 2019, the annual survey has shown a rising awareness of environmental challenges among Thais, who also express concerns about corruption, healthcare, traffic, crime, and the economy. An alarming 74% of respondents now say that environmental issues significantly affect their quality of life, a noticeable increase from 62% in 2022. Despite this growing awareness, 37% of respondents expect the situation to deteriorate over the next five years.

Efforts to address these issues seem insufficient. Only 37% of people avoid illicit products, 34% reduce electricity usage, and 33% use more reusable bags and containers. Most individuals are not making significant lifestyle changes to support environmental sustainability. The survey also recognized that companies like True, PTT, Samsung, and AIS are being acknowledged by over 40% of respondents for their positive environmental impact.

Assistant Professor Dr. Prapaporn Tivayanond Mongkhonvanit, Dean of the School of Global Studies at Thammasat University, emphasized the importance of increased awareness of environmental threats. She highlighted the need for educating future leaders to drive the necessary social changes and stressed the importance of practical steps to empower both individuals and organizations to make sustainable choices. Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and it is never too late to contribute to a sustainable future.

Key environmental issues highlighted by the survey include global warming (30%), air pollution (27%), and climate change (22%). The main sources of air pollution are identified as vehicle emissions (30%), waste burning (26%), the use of foam and plastic containers (23%), harmful construction chemicals (22%), and fossil fuel emissions (21%).
