Microsoft Japan President Miki Tsusaka on AI Adoption and Growth

Microsoft

Japan’s rapid adoption of new artificial intelligence tools positions it to significantly boost its economy and tech sector, according to Microsoft Japan President Miki Tsusaka. The country’s push for digitalization, which gained momentum during the pandemic as businesses adapted to remote work, has helped it recover from previously lagging behind in technology adoption. Tsusaka emphasized that Japan’s aging population and labor shortages make AI a critical tool for driving growth.

Microsoft is focusing on enhancing the skills of women in the local workforce, which is one of the company’s four key areas in Japan. This effort is supported by a $2.9 billion investment over the next two years to expand AI data centers in the country. The announcement of this funding in April boosted Japan’s utility and industrial stocks due to expectations of increased power demand. This surge in energy needs has also prompted Tokyo’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry to advocate for restarting the world’s largest nuclear power plant.

Tsusaka highlighted cybersecurity as a top priority, emphasizing that AI cannot be utilized effectively without robust security measures, and reiterated the importance of security in AI deployment. Microsoft collaborates closely with the Japanese government and businesses at both national and local levels to ensure the responsible and safe use of technology. Tsusaka considers AI an inevitable and transformative part of the tech landscape.

Reflecting on the evolution of technology, Tsusaka remarked that the advent of the internet had initially amazed everyone and noted that mobile phones have now become an integral part of daily life. She believes that generative AI represents a technological revolution that surpasses previous advancements.
