Pachinko Industry Leaders Featured in Japan’s Richest 50
Hajime Satomi, Chairman and Group CEO of Sega Sammy Holdings, has been named one of the two pachinko industry veterans on the 2024 list of Japan’s Richest 50. Satomi’s fortune has gradually decreased over the years, peaking at $1.5 billion in 2007. In the meanwhile, 16 tycoons on this year’s list have increased compared to the previous year.
Satomi ranks 47th with an estimated net worth of $1.06 billion, a decline from $1.3 billion in 2023. At 82, he is the founder of Sammy Corporation, which started selling pachislot machines in 1975. In 2004, he merged Sammy Corporation with video game giant Sega to form Sega Sammy Holdings. The conglomerate has since expanded into integrated resort operations, holding a 45% stake in Korea’s Paradise City resort.
Ranked higher on the list is Hideyuki Busujima and his family, with a $3.9 billion fortune, placing them at 12th. Hideyuki is the chairman of pachinko-machine manufacturer Sankyo and the son of founder Kunio Busujima, who passed away in October 2016. The shareholdings of Hideyuki’s two sisters are included in this valuation.
Topping the list is Tadashi Yanai of Uniqlo with $38 billion. The biggest gainer is SoftBank Group’s Masayoshi Son, who added $6.1 billion, reclaiming the second spot with a total of $27 billion.
