Countries that receive the highest amount of money sent from abroad as remittances
The most recent World Migration Report by the United Nations states that India received the highest amount of remittances from abroad in 2022, with a total of $111 billion. This marks a significant milestone, as India is the first country to surpass the $100 billion threshold. India is far ahead of its closest competitors in terms of remittance receipts, with Mexico receiving $61.1 billion, China receiving $51 billion, the Philippines receiving $38.05 billion, and France receiving $30.04 billion. International remittances are defined as money sent from workers living abroad to their home countries.
According to the IOM report, the majority of the inflows for France and Germany, which appear in the 4th and 10th rank, respectively, are not household transfers. Instead, they relate to the salaries of cross-border workers who work in Switzerland while residing in France or Germany. The IOM report writers have highlighted that the global data on international remittances provided by the World Bank does not consider unrecorded flows through formal or informal channels. Therefore, the data provided is likely to be below the actual figures.
